7 Places to Put a Cordless Lamp When There Isn’t a Socket

There is a slightly annoying rule of interiors: the place that would look perfect with a lamp is very often nowhere near a plug socket.

It’s one of the reasons we fell for rechargeable lighting in the first place.

Cordless lamps let you light the room according to where the light looks best, rather than where whoever built the house decided to put an electrical socket.

Here are seven places where they come into their own.

1. The dining table

Possibly our favourite.

A little rechargeable lamp in the middle of a dining table creates the sort of soft glow you normally associate with a lovely restaurant.

It feels more intimate than overhead lighting, doesn’t blow out every time someone opens a door like a candle might, and can simply be lifted away when you need the table for something else.

On a longer dining table, try two or three small lamps rather than one large one.

2. The kitchen island

Kitchen islands are often brilliantly lit from above but surprisingly difficult to make cosy in the evening.

Once dinner is finished, switch off the brighter task lighting and place a cordless lamp on the island instead.

Suddenly the kitchen feels less like somewhere to chop onions and more like somewhere to pour a glass of wine.

And because there’s no cable trailing towards a socket, it still looks neat from every angle.

3. Bookshelves

Bookshelves are made for little pools of light.

A small rechargeable lamp tucked among books, ceramics and framed photographs gives shelves depth and makes the entire room feel warmer.

It’s particularly useful for fitted shelving where adding a wired lamp afterwards would be awkward or expensive.

Try placing the lamp slightly off-centre rather than perfectly in the middle. It tends to look more relaxed and collected.

4. The hallway console

There’s something lovely about walking into a house and seeing a lamp already glowing in the hallway.

Unfortunately, hallway sockets have a habit of being placed for vacuum cleaners rather than beautiful table lamps.

Place one on a console with a mirror, bowl or vase and you’ve created an inviting little moment without having to run a cable down the wall.

5. Beside the bed

Sometimes the bed simply has to go where the bed has to go.

That doesn’t necessarily coincide with the electrical plan.

Rechargeable bedside lamps allow you to position furniture properly rather than arranging everything around plug sockets.

They’re also handy in guest bedrooms, box rooms and older houses where sockets can be rather thin on the ground.

Look for a lamp with dimming so you can lower the brightness towards bedtime.

6. The forgotten corner

Most rooms have one.

Perhaps it’s a chair in the corner, a little occasional table or an alcove that looks perfectly nice during daylight and disappears completely once it gets dark.

Put a cordless lamp there.

Lighting a previously dark corner can make the whole room feel larger because the eye is drawn further into the space.

You don’t necessarily need a large lamp — often a small warm glow is enough.

7. Outside

If your lamp is specifically designed and rated for outdoor use, cordless lighting can move effortlessly from indoors to the garden.

Use it on an outdoor dining table, beside garden seating or under a pergola once the evenings start drawing in.

We particularly like portable lighting at the end of summer, when it’s still warm enough to sit outside but darkness arrives much earlier than anyone really wants it to.

Just remember that an indoor rechargeable lamp should stay indoors unless its product information specifically says otherwise.

Why cordless lamps work so well

The appeal isn’t really about the absence of a cable.

It’s about freedom to put the light where the room needs it.

Good lighting creates atmosphere by drawing attention to different areas: a shelf here, a table there, a warm corner across the room.

Once lamps can move around freely, it becomes much easier to create that layered effect.
