A little care goes a long way.

Cordless lighting is wonderfully easy to live with, and a few simple habits will help keep your lamp looking lovely and working at its best.

Charging your lamp

Use the charging cable supplied with your light and follow the instructions shown on the individual product page.

Where recommended, give your lamp a full charge before using it for the first time.

Once fully charged, unplug it rather than leaving it permanently connected to power, unless the manufacturer specifically advises otherwise.

Looking after the battery

Rechargeable batteries naturally lose a little capacity over time, but a few simple habits can help prolong their life:

  • Charge your lamp regularly

  • Avoid leaving it completely flat for long periods

  • Keep it away from excessive heat

  • Use the recommended charging cable and power source

  • If you’re storing it for a while, give it a charge every so often

Keeping it looking lovely

Switch your light off before cleaning.

Metal, wood and painted finishes can usually be wiped gently with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, strong chemicals or anything that might scratch the finish.

For fabric and pleated lampshades, a soft brush or low-suction vacuum attachment works well for removing dust. Take a little extra care around pleats and trims so they keep their shape.

Outdoor lighting

Only use a light outdoors if it is specifically designed for outdoor use.

Check the product’s IP rating and individual care instructions before placing it outside. Even outdoor-rated lighting will generally stay looking its best for longer if it is brought inside during severe weather, heavy frost or long periods when it isn’t being used.

Solar lights

Solar lights love daylight.

Position the solar panel where it can receive as much direct daylight as possible and keep it free from leaves, dirt and debris.

Charging performance will naturally vary with the weather, season and location - particularly during the darker UK winter months - so you may notice a shorter glow time after grey or overcast days.

If your solar light also offers USB charging, you can use this as a useful top-up when daylight is in short supply.
